Apamée, Syrie

Apamée est située sur la rive droite de l'Oronte à 55 km au nord ouest de Hama et surplombe la plaine du Ghab. Elle a été fondée vers 300 avant JC par Séleucos Nikatôr, premier roi Séleucide en Syrie qui lui a donné le nom de sa femme. C'est, parmi les magnifiques sites que nous avons visités en Syrie, celui pour lequel j'ai eu un gros coup de coeur ! Groaning Norias Syria

see more on www.toovs.com On the riverbank of the Orontes River in the city Hama in Syria you can see the huge wooden waterwheels - Norias. Impressive because of their size - about 20 meters high - but also because of their sound. The friction of the wood (both the wheels as the blocks on which they are mounted)produces a groaning sound. There used to be around 30 Norias - the oldest dates from the 14th century - now about 12 of them remain. They were built to provide water for the city Hama and for irrigation. Apamea (Syria)

Apamea was built on the Orontes River's right bank in 300 BC by Seleucus Nicator, the first Seleucid king in Syria, and was named after his wife Apame. Under Seleucus Nicator's reign, Apamea flourished and became home to half a million residents. In 64 BC, the city became part of Pompey's Roman Empire, and it was during that time that many of the structures that can be seen today were built. Apamea is most famous for the Cardo Maximus, the main thoroughfare that is a mile-long colonnade made up of columns with twisted fluting. [ voir sur Youtube.com ]

Hama and it's nouria's, Syria

Hama, the 5th largest city of Syria is famous for it's nouria's. They are up to 20 meters in diameter and were used to irrigate the higher ground around the Orontes river bed. The oldest nouria's in Hama date from the 14th century. Hama is also known as the city where in 1982 an uprising of the Syrian brach of the muslim brotherhood was brutally broken by the Syrian army at the cost of more than 10.000 people killed. Much of the older parts of town destroyed by artillery fire to make room for tanks to enter the narrow streets of the city center. [ voir sur Youtube.com ]
