Destination Senegal, West Africa
An introduction to Senegal, a West African country offering a diverse range of experiences, beginning with Dakar, one of the worlds most dynamic music and culture centers. The capital is also filled with vibrant markets, an active nightlife and flavorful global cuisine. For a more meditative travel experience, tourists can head to the heritage site, Goree Island, and to the first French settlement in the region, Saint Louis. Senegal is also a destination with beaches, fishing villages, tropical forests, wetlands, mangroves, birds, and wildlife. Delegates in the Africa Travel Association's 35th Annual Congress in The Gambia from May 17-20, 2010 can explore Senegal on pre- or post- congress tour.

CULTURE 3: SENEGAL: Rehearsal of sabar drumming and dance group (M`Baye M`Boup).
Rehearsal of the percussion group of M`Baye M`Boup in Dakar. Together with ballet dancers, the group was preparing a concert which finally took place in Dakar, Senegal. This rehearsal was one of the most exciting and amazing things I`ve seen in Africa. The powerful playing of sabar orchestra mixed with an extraordinary dance performance. In Senegal and especially in Dakar you can find a lot of different styles of djembe and other percussion drumming. You have traditional djembe drumming performed most often by families of Malian origin, you have traditional sabar drumming performed by Senegalese people from Wolof and other ethnic groups, you have Seourouba and Bougarabou drumming from Casamance region of Senegal. Finally, you have modern ballet style which mixes all kinds of earlier performances. M`Baye M`Boup is a percussionist playing sabar and djembe as well. You can find him in Dakar by asking in Ballet National of Senegal. Jeśli chcesz wiedzieć więcej o muzyce i tańcu Afryki Zachodniej, czytaj na: www.strefarytmu.pl

Sana Ndiaye performs "Children" on the Akonting
This original song by Sana is an excerpt from the video series "How to Play the Akonting with Sana Ndiaye" on the Ships of the Sea Museum website: www.shipsofthesea.org.----- The akonting (or ekonting) is one of almost 60 documented plucked spike lutes found in West Africa, and is considered by some musicologists to be (at the least) one of the primary ancestors of the African/American instrument which became the gourd banjo. Despite its simple appearance, the akonking is capable of sophisticated and fascinating musical expression. It is now, however, only rarely played in the Senegambia -- the region of its origin. ------ Sana Ndiaye was born in the village of Djembering in the southern region of Senegal. He began to play the akonting as a small boy, taught by his grandfather in the traditional manner of the Jola people. Over the years Sana continued to balance his schooling with playing the akonting for community functions and celebrations, and developed many innovations which have expanded the repertoire of the instrument.

Saint-Louis, or Ndar as it is called in Wolof, is the capital of Senegal's Saint-Louis Region. Located in the northwest of Senegal, near the mouth of the Senegal River, and 200 miles north of Senegal's Capital City Dakar. Saint-Louis was the capital of the French colony of Senegal from 1673 until independence in 1960. From 1920 to 1957 it also served as capital of the neighboring colony of Mauritania (Wikipedia).
